Finals Day 2000

Seniors

MENS SINGLES

In the bottom half of the Mens Singles draw, one of the club's most promising juniors, Sam Hashimzai, squeezed through 7-5 7-5 against Peter Penney, but his run came to an end at the hands of last year's runner up, Dave Winship. Loyd Parks beat former champion, Paul Flood, 7-5 6-3 and then stormed through to the final with straight sets wins against Richard Ward (6-4 7-5) and Dave Winship (6-2 6-4).

In the top half of the draw, Trevor Gray was the first to claim a place in the quarter finals by beating John Volland in straight sets, but for the second successive year he lost out to defending champion, Sean Carson. Sean progressed to yet another final with a straight sets win against David Evans (6-2 6-4).

The final swung one way and then the other, and Loyd must take credit for recovering from a first set whitewash, but Sean's experience gave him the edge (6-0 6-7 6-3). It was Sean's third successive singles title (and he has now won 4 out of the last 5).

LADIES SINGLES

Defending ladies' champion, 15 year-old Jenny Lock, started this year's campaign with a 6-1 6-3 win against Bianca Winship and proceeded to the final without dropping another game!

Rosemary Benford reached the semis with a straight sets win against Anne Baldwin. She fought hard to take Katie Balls to three sets, but Katie prevailed (6-2 in the final set).

In a repeat of last year's final, Jenny triumphed over Katie for the second successive year (6-2 6-1).

MENS DOUBLES

Last year's runners up, Trevor Gray and Dave Winship, completed a sound 6-3 6-4 win over Paul Flood and David Evans, but fell in straight sets in the semis to the top seeds, Sean Carson and Loyd Parks. Sean and Loyd looked favourites to take the title, but perhaps their efforts in the singles final took their toll as they crashed in straight sets to the dark horses, Richard Ward and Charles Freeman.

LADIES DOUBLES

The Ladies title could not have been more emphatically claimed. Ellie Fry and Jenny Lock did not concede a single game as youth prevailed over the experience of Beryl Bartley and Anne Baldwin.

MIXED DOUBLES

Bianca and Dave Winship earned a place in the Mixed Doubles final with a hard-fought win (6-4 4-6 6-1) against top seeds, Rosemary Benford and Paul Flood. There they met Katie Balls and Trevor Gray in the longest and most closely-contested match of the finals. Katie and Trevor eventually took the title after a two and a half hour marathon (5-7 7-5 6-4).

Juniors

The U18 Boys Singles final featured a good contest between Neil Douglas and Sam Hashimzai. Sam took the title with an emphatic final set performance, all the more remarkable because he lost the second set 6-0!
