About Caversham Park Tennis Club
Caversham Park Tennis Club is a small, friendly club famous for two initiatives in particular:

1. We open our gates to non-members for coaching throughout the summer!
2. Junior members don't pay for their coaching - the club pays!

Background

Caversham Park Tennis Club is located at Clayfield Copse, Caversham Park Road, Caversham Park Village, Reading, Berks, England.

From 1969 until 1976, club members used tennis courts at a local school. A series of high rent increases inspired a small group of dedicated club members to search for a piece of land on which to build some courts. Two years of letters, phone calls and meetings finally persuaded the local council to lease out some land at Clayfield Copse, bordering Caversham Park Village in Reading.

Planning permission for 4 outdoor macadam tennis courts was duly obtained and, in 1979, the courts were built (along with a clubhouse).

Tennis clubhouse, economy style!

We are now a small but thriving local tennis club, serving the needs of the local community (and beyond!). Our teams have enjoyed tremendous success in the last few years and the Mens Team will be competing in Division 1 of the Berkshire League this summer. We always welcome enquiries from anyone interested in joining, no matter what standard! CPTC is not a profit-making organisation. All subscriptions are used for the running and maintenance of the club. As you can see below, there is something for everyone - even non-members!

Juniors

Performance Squad

We have a particularly successful junior section, catering for most standards up to county level. Group coaching is provided free throughout the summer (May-July). The boys are coached on Friday evenings 6 -7 p.m., the girls on Friday evenings 7-8 p.m. Selected juniors are coached 6-7 p.m. Sunday evenings. All groups are in the charge of qualified LTA coaches (Mark Winship, Dave Winship and Paul Flood).

They start young here!

Saturday morning is the junior club morning - a very popular feature! The games are supervised by Dave Winship, with assistance from the older juniors. Click here for more details! The juniors (as well as the seniors) make the most of the 'next day' stringing service, particularly during the summer tournament season. Teams are entered in the Berkshire Junior League.

Child Protection Policy

We aim to create an enjoyable environment for all juniors who wish to take part in tennis, other sport and social activities at the club. We emphasise that young people have the right to be safe, secure and free from threat. We also acknowledge that young people have the right to be treated with respect and for their concerns to be listened to and acted upon.

The club strives to ensure that junior members have specific programmes and facilities designated for them, with adequate supervision. There are procedures in place to help any young person who requests help and support on a confidential basis, in issues relating to Child Protection. All coaches, coaching assistants and volunteers working with young people are either licensed coaches or have signed the club self declaration form in relation to Child Protection. They are all aware of and apply the LTA Code of Conduct for Those Working with Children in Tennis.

The club has an adult member who is specifically responsible for young people. This persons name is Dave Winship.

Seniors

Club sessions take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights, Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. All sessions are popular and well attended (you can always be sure of a game!).

A peg system operates during these sessions. Doubles has priority over singles and short sets are played (tiebreaker at 5-5), so everyone gets plenty of variety during the session. Competitive singles is organised on Sunday afternoons for those who wish to improve their rating.

Teams compete in the Berkshire League.

New members are always most welcome.

Monday Night Coaching

Monday night (6:30 - 8:00) is coaching night for beginners and intermediate players (and anyone else who needs to tune up their game). It's open to non-members and represents a stepping stone for players aspiring to become club members.

Pre-booking is essential. Twelve places are available and they are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Click here to book online - bookings without payment can not be made more than six days in advance (emails received before Tuesday will be rejected!). The only way to jump the queue is to pay in advance. The cost is 3 per session.

If your place is confirmed, just turn up with a racket, suitable shoes and 3! The season starts in May and finishes at the end of July.
