Special Tournaments

The 2002 summer season kicked off with an Open American Tournament on Easter Saturday. There was a good turnout, the rain stayed away and the stage was set for an entertaining afternoon of competitive social tennis. Charles Freeman, Tim Ramirez, Paul Flood and Trevor Gray were all drawn together in Group B, which looked considerably stronger than Group A. The ladies were more evenly spread. At the end of the group stage, Vic Fry and Rosemary Benford were outright winners in Group A. Charles Freeman and Tim Ramirez finished level on points in Group B. Charles won a gripping tiebreaker to settle the matter and Kim Fry emerged as the other Group B winner.

And so to the final. Vic Fry must have thought he'd done enough when he and Kim reached the change-partner stage with a 3-1 lead, but Charles had other ideas as he and Kim rattled off four games on the trot.

After the tennis, everyone enjoyed a finger buffet, provided by the club committee. The event was a great success and raised well over 100 profit for the club. Other highlights of the afternoon included Celine Cheng's promising debut in senior tennis and Mahmoud's amazing vanishing act!

A similar event is planned for the start of the 2003 summer season.

Open Day

This year, the Club's Open Day will take place on Saturday May 31st.

The date was chosen so that we can link up with Woodlands Day - a family event involving craft workers, stalls, activities, walks and games in the woods and fields of Clayfield Copse. The event is organised as part of Reading Children's Festival.

We staged our 2002 event on Sunday June 30th - World Cup Final day! In keeping with events in Japan, the juniors competed in a World Cup Tennis tournament. No less than 65 juniors dashed through the gates to take part. We're not sure if they were tennis fans or football fans or both! What we do know is that they thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon's entertainment. Oh, and Spain won the final!

The Committee are indebted to Mark Winship, Trevor Gray, Clare Millett and Dave Winship for organising the tournament. Many thanks to Paul Flood for organising activities with "Boris" the Ball Machine, and also to Bianca Winship, Rosemary Benford, Steve Gould and Mick Preston (and all the other club members who turned up) for helping with the administration of the event.

Club Vision

As you may be aware by now, the LTA has launched its Club Vision initiative, emphasising the role of clubs in the blueprint for improving British tennis. Funding is available to clubs that meet the "Club Vision" criteria.

Our application for facility project funding in respect of floodlighting, a new clubhouse and two new courts was discussed at a meeting with the Berkshire LTA on Thursday 14th November 2002.

The County Development Officer outlined the following areas we still need to address in order to secure the backing of the Berkshire LTA in any application for funding:

1. The extension of the lease (for at least a further 25 years) must be confirmed

2. A formal business plan must be drawn up (complete with cashflow forecasts)

3. The club's development programme must be managed by a licensed LTA coach

4. The Club must be an LTA accredited Mini Tennis centre

5. The Club must have a Child Protection policy in place

Check back regularly for further news on this.

Peg System - Rules

When you arrive at the court, locate your peg and place it in the queue (the waiting area of the peg board). If there are no other pegs in the queue, place yours to the left hand side of the top row. If there are others, place yours to the right of the queue.

When a court becomes free, the person whose peg is at the front of the queue selects the next four to play. This selection should be made from the first six pegs in the queue. The four pegs thus selected should be transferred from the queue to the on court area of the peg board.

When a set is finished the winners pegs should be placed ahead of the losers pegs in the queue.

Annual General Meeting

The 35th Annual General Meeting of the Club was held at the Milestone Centre (Youth Wing) on Thursday 28th November 2002. The Chairman, Treasurer and Junior Organiser presented reports for the year, a new committee was elected and it was agreed that subscriptions would be increased by the current rate of inflation. The Club Constitution was amended to reflect the club's commitment to a child protection policy. Minutes of the meeting have been posted on the notice board in the clubhouse.

LTA Ratings Scheme

"Players who wish to improve their LTA Rating must demonstrate match consistency through beating equal or higher rated opponents, whilst not incurring many losses against equal or lower rated opponents."

This philosophy underpins the LTA Ratings Scheme which is currently in the process of transition from the old points based system to a new system based upon a Performance Percentage calculation.

The new system works as follows:

A = the number of wins against equal or higher rated players
B = the number of losses against equal or lower rated players
Performance Percentage = A / (A+B) x 100

Players achieving a 60% (or better) Performance Percentage will increase their Rating, provided they record a minimum number of wins against players equally or higher rated (seven for juniors, three for seniors and veterans).

Players achieving a Performance Percentage between 30% and 60% will maintain their current Rating.

Players with a Performance Percentage of less than 30% will drop a Rating if they fall within the "Drop Zone" appropriate to their age group. The Drop Zones are as follows:

DROP ZONES
AGE GROUP DROP ZONE (new rating) DROP ZONE (old rating)
Seniors 5.1 or higher 3.1 or higher
Age 17/18 6.1 or higher 4.1 or higher
Age 15/16 7.1 or higher 5.1 or higher
Age 13/14 8.1 or higher 6.1 or higher
Age 11/12 8.2 or higher 6.2 or higher
Age 10&U 9.1 or higher 6.3 or higher

Example

John plays 40 matches during the Ratings Run. He wins 9 matches against equal or higher rated players (A = 9). He loses 15 matches against equal or lower rated players (B = 15). His other 16 matches are not relevant to the calculation as he performs as expected (beating lower rated players and losing to higher rated players).

John's Performance Percentage is calculated as follows:

9 / (9+15) x 100 = 37.5%

As his Performance Percentage is between 30% and 60%, John's Rating remains the same.

The calculation is based on the computer running three iterations so as to achieve a stable result. It is therefore not possible for players to establish for themselves whether or not their Rating will change (the performance and subsequent movements of opponents will have an effect on the calculations).

The Ratings Divisions are to be realigned as follows:

RATINGS REALIGNMENT
New Category Old Category
1.1 1.1
1.2 1.2
2.1 1.3
2.2 1.4
3.1 1.5
3.2 2.1
4.1 2.2
4.2 2.3
5.1 3.1
5.2 3.2
6.1 4.1
6.2 4.2
7.1 5.1
7.2 5.2
8.1 6.1
8.2 6.2
9.1 6.3
9.2 7.1
10.1 7.2
10.2 7.3

Maintenance

Are you a club member with some spare time? Perhaps you would like to help us preserve the life of the courts by assisting with maintenance. The official advice about maintaining our macadam courts is as follows. Always keep the courts clean and free of dirt, dust, leaves and vegetation. In winter, the court should be washed once a week. Do not use hard brooms or squeegees as this only damages the surface and condemns the upper layers to a shorter life.
Sweep or blow clean (weekly)
Rinse (weekly)
Trim Grass (as needed)
Remove leaves/needles (autumn)
Repair cracks (autumn)
Repair cracks/remove stains (spring)
Wash winter debris (spring)

Club Rules

If there is a vacant court during any session, it may be used by either seniors (during a junior session) or juniors (during a senior session) for as long as that court is not required. If a league match is in progress, players must ensure that this is not disrupted in any way, i.e. by keeping the noise level down, etc.

Use of the courts at unscheduled times is on a first-come-first-served basis. Members may play singles (not just doubles) even if there are others waiting, but the following courtesy must be observed: if members are waiting, play must be restricted to the completion of a short set (tie-break at five-all), and if members are practising (i.e. not playing a set), they should restrict their court time to one hour only.

A member may play with a guest (only one guest per member at a time) on payment of a fee fixed by the committee. It is the member's responsibility to pay the fee direct to a committee member. No guest may play on more than three occasions in a year.

Keys for the gate may be purchased from the Membership Secretary. Keys for the clubhouse are issued at the discretion of the committee.

Recognised tennis shoes must be worn. Players must not play without a shirt. Bicycles, pushchairs, dogs, skateboards, roller blades, etc are not allowed on court. The last member to leave the club must ensure that clubhouse lights and appliances are switched off and that the clubhouse and gate are locked.

Subscriptions must be paid in accordance with the Club Constitution. Details for the current year are posted in the clubhouse.

Club Sessions - Court Etiquette

Players should observe the following "unspoken" rules when playing senior club sessions:

Talk quietly when you're near a court and play is in progress. Avoid walking behind a court when a point is in progress.

If you've got more than 4 balls on your court, return the extra ones to a neighbouring court. Always ensure 4 balls are returned to the clubhouse after your set.

Be responsible for calls on your side of the net. Make sure your opponents hear the call. If the ball is good, say nothing and play on. Always give your opponents the benefit of any doubt. If you're not sure if your opponent's shot is in or out, it's in! Always respect your opponent's calls.

Call and agree the game score at the start of each point and the set score at the start of each game.

If the score reaches 5-5, a tie-break should be played.
