Mens Singles Winner

Winner: Mark Winship

Defending champion Charles Freeman started this year's campaign with a 6-2 6-3 win against Steve Gould and followed it with an impressive performance against top junior Sam Hashimzai. The most intriguing match in the top half of the draw was in the second quarter where former champion Sean Carson took on his first-team doubles partner, David Evans. Sean took the first set 6-4 in damp, overcast, slippery conditions. David fought back and started to wear down his opponent with unerring accuracy from the back of the court. Undeterred by losing an exceptionally long service game at 3-1 in the second set, David coasted through the rest of the set and then won the deciding set 6-2 to reach the semi-finals.

In the bottom half, Trevor Gray booked his place in the quarter finals with a 6-4 6-3 win over Club Captain Paul Flood in very blustery conditions. Dave Winship joined him with a 6-0 6-3 victory against the improving Panos Kontogiannis and then overcame Richard Ward in a long three-setter. The stage was then set for a father-and-son semi-final encounter between Dave and Mark Winship - and junior won at the cost of just one game.

It's six years since Mark's name last appeared in the men's singles draw. He was only 15 years old on that occasion and finished runner up to Andrew Barclay. On this occasion, he went one better, out-hitting Charles Freeman on his way to a 6-2 6-3 victory.

Ladies Singles Winner

Winner: Ellie Fry

Mary Lambert presented Jane Ashworth with plenty of problems, especially with her movement around the court, but Jane toughed it out superbly in the end, winning in three sets. In the semi-finals, Jane got off to a great start against defending champion Kate Balls. Too many unforced errors cost Kate the first set as she tried to force the pace, but a more patient approach in the second set paid dividends as Kate recovered a break of serve and took the tie-break. At 5-5 in the final set, it was difficult to pick a winner, but Kate's determination may have been the telling factor as she seized the next two games and the match.

Second seed Ellie Fry defied the wind and the rain and a tenacious performance from the fast-improving Celine Loader to take her place in the final. Ellie edged the first set 7-5, but Celine adapted more quickly to the deteriorating conditions and levelled the match. The third set was played in persistent rain and Ellie gritted it out 6-4.

The final was expected to be a closely-contested affair. And it was. Seventeen-year-old Ellie coasted through the first set 6-1, but then lost concentration and allowed Kate to impose herself on the match. Taking full advantage of the lapse, twice former-champion Kate took the second set 6-2. But Ellie was not to be denied. Showing plenty of resilience in the closing stages when Kate was dominating the rallies, she held her nerve and served out for the title at the second opportunity.

MENS DOUBLES

Last year's champions, Charles Freeman and Richard Ward, went their separate ways this year. Charles lined up with Sam Hashimzai and they took on David Evans and Sean Carson in the semi-finals. Charles and Sam prevailed in two closely fought sets.

In the bottom half, Trevor Gray and Dave Winship booked a place in the semis with a three sets win over Paul Jago and Steve Gould, but then succumbed in straight sets to Mark Winship and Neil Douglas.

The final produced some excellent, occasionally spectacular, doubles. Charles and Sam took the first set 6-3. Neil Douglas overcame his early nerves and helped Mark level the match, but Charles and Sam steadied the boat early in the final set and there wasn't another suggestion of a wobble as they took it 6-2.

Jane Ashworth and Celine Loader survived a spirited challenge from Mary Lambert and Carol Douglas before claiming a place in the semi-finals. Mary's court coverage and Carol's ruthless net-play proved more than a handful, but Jane and Celine earned the vital break of serve at 5-5 in the final set with some astute ball placements and they completed the task as darkness started to fall. In the semi-final, they blew hot and cold against top seeds Kate Balls and Bianca Winship, but attacked the net with authority in the final set. The change of tactics paid dividends as they clinched the match 6-1 0-6 6-2 to reach the final.

Beryl Bartley and Rosemary Benford drew on all their experience to overcome the young pairing of Ellie Fry and Michelle Olive 6-3 7-6 in the other semi-final, but injury forced Rosemary to pull out of the final and so Jane and Celine took the title.

MIXED DOUBLES

Mixed Doubles Winners

Winners: Charles Freeman & Jane Ashworth

Unlike the other doubles events, the mixed draw contained several unchanged partnerships. Defending champions and top seeds, Charles Freeman and Jane Ashworth, coasted through the top half of the draw without dropping a set.

Paul Jago and Beryl Bartley got off to a good start with a convincing 6-1 6-2 win against Steve Gould and Jo Todd. They then upset the second seeds, Trevor Gray and Kate Balls, to book a place in the semis. Their semi-final opponents were Dave Winship and Ellie Fry, who took the first set 7-5 and were poised at 5-3 40-15 in the second set when the match suddenly turned around. Paul and Beryl edged the second set on a tie-break and went on to take the final set 6-2.

Paul and Beryl never really found the same form in the final and Charles and Jane took the title for the second year in succession.

Boys U18 Singles Winner

Winner: Sam Hashimzai

There were no surprises in the top half of the draw which saw defending champion and top seed Sam Hashimzai coast his way through to the final.

Baz Moss was extended all the way by promising newcomer Luke Donegan. Luke's consistency earned him a tie-break which Baz eventually edged 11-9 in a nerve-jangling finish. His reward was a semi-final encounter with Ollie Fry, but it was the end of the road for him as Ollie prevailed in straight sets.

Sam claimed the title yet again, but it was by no means one-way traffic. Ollie produced a plucky performance and forced a tie-break in the second set, but Sam's experience and greater weight of shot proved decisive as he came through 6-3 7-6.

Boys U12 Singles Winner

Winner: Zaeem Bajwa

Alex Poulden's never-say-die attitude earns him a lot of respect, but Zaeem Bajwa was just too strong for him as he took the title for the second year in succession.

GIRLS U18 SINGLES

Alice Walker and Celine Cheng powered through to the final just as they did last year, but it was interesting to watch the progress of the younger girls like Natalie Salmon and Lisa Winship.

The final produced the longest match of the tournament. Celine, who was runner-up to Alice last year, fell behind in all three sets. She fought back tenaciously to win the first, lost the second on the tie-break and finally wrappped it up 7-5 6-7 6-3 after three hours of toil in the unforgiving heat.

Boys Doubles Winners

Winners: Ollie Fry & Warren Cheng

Arguably the most enjoyable match of this year's Finals Day. Warren Cheng raised his game to produce probably his best performance of the year and he and Ollie Fry prevailed 6-2 7-5 against the promising Bajwa brothers, Zan and Zaeem.

GIRLS DOUBLES

Celine Cheng and Lisa Winship were simply too strong for Alice Walker and Emma Russell. They powered their way to a 6-2 6-0 victory to open proceedings on Finals Day.
